How the series was born!

I began writing about Ned, the magic pony, in the mid 1990s when my editor at Scholastic asked me to come up with an idea for a new pony book series.

I thought back to the time when I was a little girl.  The thing I had wanted more than anything else was a pony.  I entered competitions to win one but never did and every birthday wish was for a pony of my own.  So it didn't take me long to come up with the idea of a ‘magic' pony.  A pony that could speak, take her rider on adventures and be the biggest of secrets.

My heroine is Natty and she lives with a family that doesn't have enough money to buy her the pony she so badly wants.  Penelope Potter, who lives at the end of the lane, has everything that Natty wishes for; a pony called Pebbles, a field and a stable to keep him in and a horse trailer.

But with a magic pony, I thought, Natty will have something very special indeed.  But where should this magic pony live that would keep him a secret?  One morning the answer to this important question popped into my head.  In a magic pony poster!
